The below letter is being sent to all 435 members of Congress today expressing AONE’s opposition to the American Healthcare Act which is being marked up in the US House of Representatives today. The letter is also available on the AONE website: http://www.aone.org/news/aone-letter-to-congress-on-the-american-health-care-act.
On behalf of the American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE), we are writing to express our concerns about the
American Health Care Act, legislation to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act (ACA).
As the national organization of the 9,700 nurse leaders who manage and provide direct patient care across the health care continuum, we are deeply concerned about legislation that would disrupt and deny care to the millions who have benefitted from the ACA. Currently, 21 million Americans have gained access to care through marketplace exchanges and through the expansion of the Medicaid program. AONE is concerned the most vulnerable populations, who gained access to needed health care services especially through Medicaid, will lose lifesaving coverage under this proposal.
Understanding the current legislation under consideration by the House is a working document, we are concerned that proposed changes could create instability in insurance markets, reduce essential benefits and disrupt the full range of lifesaving services needed to maintain and improve the health of Americans.
Nurses are instrumental in ensuring patients receive safe, quality and coordinated care across health care settings. We understand the need for accessible and cost-effective quality healthcare and see first-hand the tragic consequences of when care is denied, unavailable or too expensive. For these reasons, AONE cannot support the American Health Care Act as written.
We look forward to working with the Congress and the Administration to find solutions that provide coverage and care for all Americans.
